Hello! This is my first post, so I’ll try to keep it short. This past month, I’ve been upgrading my setup at home, and I’m really happy with it. I’m going to write a few short posts on it to kick off this blog.
I’ll start with what I am upgrading from:
- An Amplifi Router
- An old mac mini that served as a media server and hosted a toy rails app I made 5 years ago (I host it, maintain and do security upgrades on it more as a learning exercise than wanting to show it off)
I’ve upgraded to:
- An enterprise grade router, switches, and access points. (All Ubiquiti Unifi Gear). I had just upgraded to gigabit internet, and needed to actually hardwire things due to the limitations of wireless technology.
- A Kubernetes cluster made out of my mac mini, a VM on my gaming PC, and an Intel NUC. I have started to use Kubernetes at work, and I wanted to get up to speed on it quickly. I also wanted to self host more things.
- A Synology NAS. I wanted something independent of my cluster for dependable storage, and something that was capable of running docker and Plex.
I’m planning on writing a post (or two) on each one of these upgrades, starting with the hardware behind the Kubernetes cluster.
